Scarlet & Violet's addition to the Pokémon Trading Card Game changes the game
New Pokémon were introduced last month with the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet as Trainers started their Treasure Hunt in the Paldea region. With changes to card design, pack content, and other aspects in the upcoming Scarlet & Violet Series, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is following suit and moving forward on its own.
The traditional yellow borders that currently frame Pokémon TCG cards will eventually be replaced by the same silver border that is utilised in Japan. This adjustment further harmonises the game globally by framing the Pokémon TCG artwork within its original border. Trainer cards' top-right subcategory (Supporter, Stadium, etc.), which is now there for visibility in players' hands, will relocate to the top-left corner of the card.
The Scarlet & Violet series is also redefining how energy cards are used. On the top of the card, the name of the Energy will now be displayed along with a new subtype tag for Energy. Energy cards will now have the Energy symbol that is present on them in the bottom right corner. This modification clarifies for each player the quantity and type of Energy associated to each Pokémon. Finally, on the bottom left of each card, expansion symbols have been changed to expansion codes.
With the introduction of the Scarlet & Violet series, Pokémon Trading Card Game products will experience various MSRP hikes in some areas due to global inflation's impact on the cost of materials and production. For instance, a booster pack's price will rise from $3.99 to $4.49 USD. Every pack of Pokémon cards will now contain three guaranteed foil cards every booster—all cards with a rarity of "Rare" or higher will now be foil—in an effort to maintain the quality and value of the Pokémon TCG experience. Additionally, certain products will include extra accessories. A full-art promotional card and an additional booster pack, for instance, will be included in the Elite Trainer Box.
